✈️🌍 Istanbul Airport Is Now the World’s Most Connected Airport
Istanbul has just reached a major milestone in global aviation.
According to the OAG Megahubs 2026 ranking, Istanbul Airport (IST) has become the world’s most internationally connected airport, moving into first place for the first time and overtaking London’s Heathrow Airport.
The result puts Istanbul at the centre of international air travel and highlights Türkiye’s growing role as a major connection point between Europe, Asia, Africa and other regions.
🌍 Why Is Istanbul Airport So Connected?
Istanbul’s geographical position gives it a major advantage.
The city sits between Europe and Asia, making it a natural transfer point for travellers flying between different parts of the world.
But geography isn’t the only reason.
The airport’s connectivity is strongly supported by Turkish Airlines, which operates around 80% of flights at Istanbul Airport. Its extensive network allows passengers to connect through Istanbul to hundreds of destinations.
According to OAG, Istanbul had:

These figures helped Istanbul take the number-one position globally.
🥇 Istanbul Overtakes London Heathrow
For years, London Heathrow has been one of the world’s major international hubs.
But the 2026 OAG ranking has changed the order.

OAG’s index measures potential international connections in relation to the destinations served, rather than simply ranking airports by passenger numbers.
That distinction is important: the world’s busiest airport isn’t necessarily its most connected airport.
✈️ What Makes Istanbul Different?
Istanbul Airport isn’t currently the world’s busiest airport by capacity.
Instead, its strength comes from how effectively its flight schedules create opportunities for passengers to connect between destinations.
OAG specifically notes that Istanbul is the eighth-busiest airport globally by capacity, yet it ranks first for connectivity.
This makes Istanbul particularly important for travellers who need to fly between regions that don’t have convenient direct connections.

Europe Dominates the Top of the Ranking
Istanbul isn’t the only European airport performing strongly.
Five of the world’s top 10 most connected airports are located in Europe:

And 12 airports in the global top 50 are located in Europe.
Other European airports appearing in the top 50 include Madrid, Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen, Athens, Munich, Rome, Barcelona and Zurich.
This shows just how important European airports remain for international travel.
Why Did Heathrow Fall to Second Place?
Heathrow didn’t suddenly become an unimportant airport.
In fact, its international seat capacity during the measured period was slightly higher than Istanbul’s.
However, OAG reported that Heathrow’s potential connections on its busiest day fell by 6% year-on-year. The organisation linked part of this change to disruption affecting Middle East schedules, with Heathrow’s capacity to the Middle East down significantly in August 2026.
So the change at the top reflects differences in network connectivity and available connections, rather than simply the number of passengers using each airport.
🛫 Turkish Airlines Plays a Major Role
One of the biggest factors behind Istanbul’s rise is Turkish Airlines.
The airline operates approximately 80% of flights at Istanbul Airport, giving it a huge network through the hub.
This allows flights to be coordinated around connecting passengers and creates a large number of possible combinations between incoming and outgoing services.
For travellers, that can mean more opportunities to find a convenient connection through Istanbul rather than travelling through several different hubs.
📊 How Does OAG Measure “Connectivity”?
It’s important to understand what the ranking actually measures.
OAG’s Megahubs methodology looks at possible connections between inbound and outbound flights within a six-hour window, where at least one of the flights is international.
It then compares those potential connections with the destinations served by the airport. The 2026 ranking uses data from the year ending August 2026, with the connectivity calculation based on the busiest day of the year — 2 August 2026.
So this isn’t simply a ranking of:
“Which airport has the most passengers?”
Instead, it asks a different question:
“How effectively does this airport connect travellers to destinations around the world?”
