Moldova Is Getting a Bigger Spot on the Europe Travel Map
For years, Moldova has often been overlooked by travellers planning a European holiday. But 2026 is bringing a noticeable change.
International tourism arrivals to Moldova increased by 25% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, according to Moldova’s Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, citing the latest UN Tourism World Tourism Barometer. The ministry said this was the largest increase in international tourist arrivals recorded in Europe during that period. (mded.gov.md)
And now Moldova is taking another step to put itself in front of more international travellers.
🌍 A New Push to Promote Moldova Internationally
On 24 September 2026, a new promotional campaign involving Booking.com and Moldova’s National Tourism Office is being launched to increase Moldova’s visibility among international travellers.
The campaign is designed to promote Moldova through Booking.com’s global digital reach, with particular attention to the country’s wine routes, gastronomy and cultural heritage. It will also provide tourism businesses with insights into how international visitors search for and plan trips to Moldova. (Moldova 1)
This matters because travellers increasingly discover destinations online before deciding where to go. Greater visibility on a major travel platform could make it easier for people who have never considered Moldova to discover accommodation, attractions and travel experiences there.
🍷 Moldova’s Wine Culture Is a Major Attraction
If there is one thing Moldova is particularly famous for, it is wine.
The country has a long wine-making tradition, and wine tourism is an important part of the destination’s identity.
Travellers can visit wineries, explore vineyards and experience wine-focused routes outside the capital.
Moldova’s tourism authorities are specifically highlighting wine routes and gastronomy as part of the new international promotion campaign. (Moldova 1)
For visitors interested in food and drink, this offers a different type of European experience — one that goes beyond the traditional capital-city itinerary.
🏛️ Chișinău: Moldova’s Starting Point
Most international visitors will begin their trip in Chișinău, Moldova’s capital.
The city offers a mixture of parks, cafés, museums, markets and historic architecture, making it a natural starting point for exploring the country.
But Moldova’s appeal extends well beyond its capital.
The National Tourism Office promotes attractions ranging from natural and historical sites to cultural experiences, wineries and tourist routes. (Visit Moldova)
🏞️ Orheiul Vechi: One of Moldova’s Standout Attractions
One destination that deserves particular attention is Orheiul Vechi, a cultural-natural reserve featuring dramatic landscapes, historic sites and cave monasteries.
In May 2026, Orheiul Vechi won the “Destination of the Year 2026 in the Republic of Moldova” trophy within the Romanian competition, helping increase its visibility beyond the country. (Visit Moldova)
The site is a good example of why Moldova can appeal to travellers looking for history, nature and less familiar European destinations in the same trip.
📈 The Numbers Are Moving in the Right Direction
The increase isn’t limited to one tourism campaign.
Moldova’s official statistics show that 257,300 tourists stayed in tourist accommodation establishments during January–June 2026, an increase of 15.8% compared with the same period in 2025.
Even more notable is the share of international visitors: 159,600 were non-resident tourists, representing 62% of the total. (Moldova National Statistics Office)
The number of overnight stays reached 679,900 during the first six months of 2026. (Moldova National Statistics Office)
That suggests Moldova’s tourism industry is attracting more visitors while also expanding its visibility internationally.
🌍 Who Is Visiting Moldova?
Moldova’s tourism statistics show that neighbouring countries remain particularly important to its international tourism market.
During January–June 2026, Romanian visitors accounted for 69.3% of foreign visitors served by travel agencies and tour operators, followed by Italy at 10%, Spain at 5.2% and Germany at 2.9%. (Moldova National Statistics Office)
This makes geographic proximity an important factor — but the country’s new international marketing efforts are aimed at reaching a broader audience.
🍂 Why Moldova Could Be Interesting for Autumn Travel
Autumn can be an especially attractive time to explore Moldova.
The countryside takes on warmer colours, vineyards enter an important part of their annual cycle, and the country hosts a range of cultural and food-related events.
Moldova’s official tourism calendar includes September events such as Vinopera, the Signature Wine Festival, Must Fest, the National Plum Festival and Bostaniada Ethno-Gastronomic Festival. (Visit Moldova)
For travellers who enjoy food, wine, culture and countryside experiences, autumn provides plenty of reasons to look beyond the country’s capital.
🧳 Is Moldova Becoming Europe’s Next Emerging Destination?
It is too early to say how far Moldova’s tourism growth will go, but the numbers show that international interest is increasing.
The country recorded a 25% increase in international tourist arrivals during the first half of 2026 according to Moldova’s government, while official accommodation statistics also show strong growth in visitors staying at tourist establishments. (mded.gov.md)
At the same time, Moldova is investing in international promotion, including its new Booking.com campaign.
The combination of growing visitor numbers + greater international visibility + wine and cultural tourism could put Moldova on more European travel itineraries.
Why Put Moldova on Your Travel List?
If you’re looking for something different from Europe’s busiest tourist capitals, Moldova offers:
🍷 Wine tourism
🏛️ Historic and cultural attractions
🌿 Peaceful countryside
🍽️ Local gastronomy
🏞️ Natural landscapes
🏘️ Traditional villages
📸 Less familiar European scenery
The country isn’t trying to compete with Paris, Rome or Barcelona on the same terms.
Instead, Moldova’s tourism appeal comes from offering travellers an opportunity to discover a less familiar side of Europe.
